Our conscious mind provides us with our awareness, makes decisions based on that awareness, then tells us if we made the right or wrong decision. Very powerful is this area within each of our minds, yet it’s ability to make decisions is the very reason for it’s one limitation. The limitation of the conscious mind is that it can pay attention to, or do, only one thing at a time. Because our minds are so powerful, initially this may be hard to believe, but to prove it, try this simple test.
“This is a test for my conscious mind.”
Take the above phrase and repeat it over and over to yourself, in your mind. Now keep repeating those words while you try to read the following paragraph from Start to Stop.
Start:
When your conscious mind is called upon to do two things at once, since it cannot pay attention to more than one thing, what it will do is flip back and forth between the two things. This flip–flop will be very quick, so quick, that it appears that you can do two things at once, but you will notice that either the reading slows down as you give more priority to the repetition of the words OR the repetition becomes halting as you begin to pay more attention to what you are reading.
Stop.
When faced with this situation, the reading speed will slow to less than fifty percent of what it normally is. Now, go back and re–read that paragraph normally. Did you understand it the first time? When called upon to do two things at once, the comprehension ability of the conscious mind will also suffer.
This limitation is very important to understand. How we still manage to do more than one thing at a time is explained in the next section. This limitation comes from the reality of the present moment. There is only the present. The past is gone and the future not here. Although our conscious mind can view the past and query into the future, it does this while remaining rooted in the present. Its focus may change in the next moment but whatever it changes to; the conscious mind will become saturated in the new moment, only doing one thing at that moment, but completely absorbed by that one thing.
